Americans secure 2018/19 Ice Cross Downhill World Championship titles at ATSX 500 finale in Canada
Cameron Naasz reclaimed the Ice Cross Downhill World Championship in impressive style at the 2018/19 season finale in La Sarre, Canada, after delivering another dominant display down the 425m natural ice track. In the women’s category, Amanda Trunzo wrapped up her second title in a row despite missing out on victory for the first time this season.
“Hard work pays off,” said Naasz. “It was a tough year, but that makes it five wins and that’s huge. Next year I want to come back and do it again. I want to be an ambassador for this sport, and the best way I know to do that is to lead.”
The American finished ahead of second-placed Mirko Lahti of Finland and fellow countryman Michael Iulianello in third. Canada’s Kyle Croxall had begun the day as the only man who could challenge Naasz for the title, but his hopes ended when he failed to make the semi-finals.
Trunzo arrived in La Sarre chasing a record sixth win in a row, but failed to make it a clean sweep for the season when she fell agonisingly close to the finish line in the final. Despite her third-place finish, she comfortably wrapped up her second title in a row.
“I worked really hard this season, and I’m really happy with my results,” said a jubilant Trunzo.
Switzerland’s Anais Morand took the win in La Sarre, with Canadian Jacqueline Legere edging into second place on the line.
